Routine doctor appointments

We should usually be able to offer routine appointments to see the doctor, nurse or health care assistant within three working days (this may not necessarily be the person of your choice.)

You do not have to inform the Receptionist of the reason for an appointment but it would be very much in your interests to do so.

The receptionist is not qualified to give medical advice but is able to guide you to make the best use of the services available. This may include booking with the appropriate person, arranging blood tests, planning travel vaccinations, recognising when something is urgent, and informing you of the doctors comments on the results of blood tests and other investigations.

Telephone appointments

We also offer telephone appointments to patient who need to speak to the GP/Nurse. Routine telephone consultations may be particularly useful if you are busy or work far away but need simple clinical advice or a follow-up with a doctor/nurse. Please inform the reception if you would rather have telephone appointment. Please note: GP/Nurse many ask you to come in to the surgery if they feel they need to see you in person to discuss any medical problems, to carry out examinations or discuss medications.

Emergency appointments

We should usually be able to offer emergency appointments within one working day. These appointments are for genuinely urgent problems that cannot wait for a routine appointment, and can only be booked with the doctor's consent.

You must inform the Receptionist of an indication of the nature of the urgency so that she can inform the doctor or nurse, who will decide on the appropriate action to take.

The doctor or nurse may decide on a number of different actions depending on the situation, such as telephone advice, immediate ambulance, hospital Accident & Emergency, immediate appointment, home visit, or routine appointment.

You cannot expect to choose which doctor or nurse will see you for an emergency appointment, if you claim that you have a genuinely urgent problem. You must see whoever is available though we do try our best to accommodate your requests.

In an emergency appointment the Nurse Practitioner will refer you to the doctor if clinically necesssary.

You cannot expect to choose an appointment time to suit you, if you claim that you have a genuinely urgent problem. You must accept what appointment times are available.

Please make youself aware of the rules that apply to an emergency appointment by reading this document.

Cancellations

If your appointment is no longer required please let us know as soon as you possible so we can then offer your slot to another patient.

You will soon be able to cancel and book selected appointments on line/via the internet.

Home Visits

Please request an essential home visit between 9.00am and 10.30am. We follow national guidelines to assess the medical need for a home visit, which usually means bed-bound or terminally ill people. It is often better for you to be seen in the surgery where you will usually be seen more promptly, and the clinical team will be able to make a professional assessment of your clinical condition.

Dr Docrat is available for some private work outside of NHS working hours.

Appointments can be made by telephoning the surgery during normal opening hours.

Please indicate clearly to the receptionist that your request is for Private Medical Care.
